The first patent for virtual reality was in the year 2000 to inventor Paul Marshall. It was originally envisioned for analysing financial data and was eventually transformed to create a three dimensional information landscape for sifting through financial data. The visors remained only a research tool until 2016 when Oculus released the RIFT and the HTC VIVE followed shortly after.
